Music City

I just got back from Music City, USA, aka Nashville. Aside from the horrible tragedy that happened on Monday and left us all with heavy hearts, the trip was a much needed break from my routine in NYC.

I was there for a music seminar called Tin Pan South. It is by all accounts, geared towards Country music which is really not my thing, but I got so much out of it and feel reinvigorated for my own music and creating with others.

Here are a few highlights and golden nuggets that I took from the trip:

  • I wrote 5 new songs in 3 days all with people whom I had never written before, and had such a fun time

  • Learned more about how to think about songwriting and co-writing and what to do/what not to do

  • Investing in what lights me up and brings me joy is so important

  • Remembered that songwriting is who I am. I know we’re not supposed to identify with what we do or “external things” but this feels like an internal thing. Songwriting is a HUGE part of my soul and brings so much joy and being around other people who are the same felt like I could let out a big sigh of relief

  • Heard one of the panelists say “the craft of songwriting is just trying to chase magic” and I felt goosebumps all over. That’s it, exactly.

  • Writing a GREAT song is harder than it seems, and you have to just keep writing and writing and writing. and writing. and writing.

This applies to anything you love whether it’s songwriting, playing games, or writing screenplays.

If it brings you joy, do more of it. So simple. Yet profound. Sometimes you need the reminder. This was that for me.

So, yay! More songs, more music, more co-writing.

What’s something that brings you joy, that could use a little reinvigoration? Let us know in the comments so we can cheer you on!

All my love,
Dana
