From 0 to "oooooooh"- The Evolution of a Background vocal

A couple weeks ago, I went to record a song I wrote with my co-writers, Syd Caldera, and Diana Taub with our producer Pat Van Dyke in New Jersey.

It’s a song called “The Funk”.

When it came time to do the background vocals, both Syd and I had some ideas so we let the track play while we did a scratch take to see what worked.

In the second verse, I heard some "ooohs'" that I really wanted to figure out. Here is a video of the process of finding those oooohs and then recording them. Everyone goes about it a different way. I like playing around, having fun, being creative. Some people find the melodies a bit more methodically. I like to do it by ear and by feeling.

The main point is to not be afraid to try. If you hear something or want to try something new, go for it. There's no such thing as a bad idea.

Enjoy the "Evolution of a Background Vocal". I can't wait for you to hear the final song "The Funk".
